Safety in Special Rooms

General Safety

  1. Unauthorised persons are not permitted in the Special Rooms (i.e. Science Laboratories, Design & Technology Studios, Nutrition and Food Science Rooms and Art Rooms). No work activity is to be carried out by students without the presence of a teacher or instructor. 

  2. The first lesson in the Science Laboratories, Design & Technology Studios, Nutrition & Food Science Rooms and Art Rooms should emphasise on the safety rules in these Special Rooms and the proper handling of machines and equipment.

  3. Safety precautions peculiar to any new lesson should be emphasised at the start of the lesson. Students should also be briefed on the appropriate responses they should take during accidents or fire.

  4. Safety rules to be observed by students should be prominently displayed.

  5. Students should be alerted on the locations and use of first-aid boxes and fire-fighting equipment. Every Special Room must be equipped with First Aid Boxes that are prominently displayed, and easily accessible with updated supplies of properly labelled medicines.

  6. Students should always work thoughtfully and purposefully. Practical jokes and other acts of carelessness are strictly prohibited.

  7. Machines or equipment that are damaged or badly worn out should not be used. All faulty machine and equipment must be reported immediately and an "Out of Order" sign must be prominently displayed on the machines.

  8. Areas around electrical equipment should be kept dry and where appropriate, kept away from water. Students should make sure that their hands are dry and appropriate footwear is worn before using electrical appliances.

  9. The right equipment or tool should be used for the right job and should be returned to its proper place after use. Extreme care should be exercised when handling sharp-pointed or sharp-edged tools.

  10. Injuries, however minor, should be given first-aid treatment and the injured should be immediately sent for medical attention, if necessary.

  11. All serious accidents caused by machinery and tools should be reported to the Principal and Cluster Superintendent without delay.

  12. The machines involved in the accident must not be operated or tampered with until investigation has been completed by the relevant authority. All accidents and injuries must be recorded.

Safety in Science Laboratories

  1. Laboratory storerooms and preparation rooms are out of bounds to all students.

  2. Long hair should be tied up neatly to avoid any interference with laboratory work.

  3. Eating and drinking are prohibited in laboratories.

  4. Students should seek clarification from the teacher if instructions for an experiment are not thoroughly understood. Students should not proceed with an experiment if in doubt.

  5. Safety goggles must be worn whenever there is any risk of injury to the eyes.

  6. Protective gloves and clothing must be worn when handling hazardous materials.

  7. Hands must always be thoroughly washed before leaving the laboratory, regardless of whether gloves are worn.

  8. Equipment used to handle or transfer hazardous materials must be inspected for leaks, cracks and other forms of damage before use.

  9. Damaged equipment, breakages, accidents and spillage should be reported immediately to the teacher.

  10. Unlabelled chemicals should not be used. Unlabelled containers should be reported to the teacher.

  11. Chemicals or other materials must never be tasted unless specifically directed by the teacher.

  12. Students should not take apparatus or chemicals out of the laboratory without the permission of the teacher.

  13. Unauthorised experiments are prohibited. 

  14. Pipetting should always be carried out using a pipette aid and never by mouth.

  15. Sharp objects (such as needles, razors or pins) should not be discarded in waste-bins or trash bags. A sturdy container should be used for disposal of sharp objects.

  16. Chemical and biological wastes must be disposed appropriately.

  17. Chemical explosive precursors (EP) must be stored, used and handled in accordance with the strict regulations.

  18. Closer supervision by teachers would be required for younger students.

  19. Further details on experiments and activities that involve specific procedures, equipment or materials (like chemicals or microorganisms) are elaborated in the School Science Laboratory Safety Regulations issued to schools.

Safety in Design & Technology Workshop

  1. The student-teacher ratio for each D&T group should not exceed 20:1 to ensure safety in the studio learning environment. At any one time, only two (maximum) groups of students should work in a studio that is built according to the design specifications stated in the School Design Handbook. At least a TSO/EWI should be present to assist the teacher to ensure that safety is observed at all times. In the event that the ratio exceeds 20:1, risk assessment would need to be carried out to ensure that safety is not compromised.

  2. The layout in the Workshop should allow for ample circulation space and for safe working.

  3. Students should not operate machines unless they have been instructed upon the correct use and are under close supervision of teacher or instructor.

  4. All machines should have safety-guards and protective gear for users. 

  5. Good ventilation should be ensured during works that involve the use of volatile substances like acetone and thinner.

  6. The Emergency Stop Switch in the D&T Workshop should be activated at the end of each working day to cut off electrical power supply to all machines and equipment.

  7. Workshop safety rules to be observed by students are to be prominently displayed.  The following can be used as a guide to working out the set of rules:
      • Always use the right tool for the right job and return it to its proper place after use
      • Exercise extreme care when handling sharp-pointed or sharp-edged tools
      • Do not use tools that are blunt, badly worn, mushroomed or in poor condition
      • Do not handle electrical points when the hands are wet
      • Wear aprons or dustcoats during practical sessions
      • Put on safety goggles, face masks, or protective gloves in situations which require these respective protections
      • Do not wear long-sleeved shirts, school-ties, watches, rings, bracelets and bangles during practical sessions
      • Long hair should be neatly tied up during practical sessions
      • Do not rush.  Watch your step while in the workshop
      • Do not talk or walk unnecessarily in the workshop
      • Clean up the work area after each practical session
      • When in doubt, always ask

Safety in Nutrition and Food Science Rooms

  1. The student-teacher ratio in each food lab/kitchen should not exceed 20:1 to ensure safety. In the event that the ratio exceeds 20:1, risk assessment would need to be carried out to ensure that safety is not compromised.

  2. Every student should be instructed on the use of gas/electric cookers and electrical appliances such as electric mixer, grinder, blender, etc

  3. When operating gas/electric cookers:
      • All combustible materials; e.g. papers, towels, cloths, curtains, spray cans etc should be kept away.
      • Ensure there is proper ventilation in the Food Labs/kitchens at all times. 
      • The cooker should not be left unattended when cooking.
      • The cooker should be kept clean and in good working order.
      • Access to the gas control valve at the gas meter should be kept clear from obstruction. 
      • All cookers and ovens must be properly switched off when not in use.
      • All cookers should be serviced annually to ensure they are functioning and safe for use.

  4. Every student and teacher should wear an apron during practical food sessions.

  5. Long hair should be plaited or tied. Nails should be kept short and clean.

  6. Extreme care should be taken when using sharp-pointed / sharp-edged equipment / appliances and fragile glassware such as beakers and test tubes.

  7. Students should not have access to sharp-pointed / sharp-edged equipment. They should only be issued by the teacher during practical lessons when needed and kept properly after use. 

  8. Safety goggles should be worn when conducting potentially dangerous food science experiments (e.g. smoking point of fats).

  9. Chemicals should not be used when conducting food science experiments.

  10. All appliances and equipment should be well maintained and serviced regularly.

  11. Ensure that a fire extinguisher is placed at accessible location in every Food Lab/kitchen.

  12. Teachers must be familiar with the operating instructions of cooking appliances (such as steamer, pressure cooker, over, etc). 

Safety in Art Rooms

  1. Teachers must ensure that safety precautions are factored in the planning of art lessons/activities in the art room. If the art lessons/activities are conducted by external instructors, teachers are to ensure that the instructors comply with safety measures.

  2. A briefing on possible risks and safety precautions in the art room must be conducted during the first lesson/activity of the year. Reminders on safety precautions are to be carried out in subsequent lessons/activities. Separate briefings are to be conducted for students who are absent for the initial briefing. 

  3. Tools/equipment in the art room must only be used under close supervision of the teacher. Students must be briefed on the proper use of tools/equipment. 

  4. The following measures must be put in place when conducting lessons involving volatile, hazardous and/or flammable materials:
      • Ensure good ventilation by keeping windows open, particularly when using materials such as cement/clay, varnish/thinners, heated lead and wax;
      • Avoid accumulation of dust from materials such as clay, glaze, plaster, wood and fibre glass. Ensure that tables are wiped and working areas are wet mopped regularly;
      • Ensure students use spray paints, glazes, adhesives, fixatives, etc., in a spray booth, where available.  If a spray booth is unavailable, these materials should only be used in well-ventilated space or outdoor areas; and
      • Ensure students use protective gear such as safety glasses, dust or respiratory masks, ear plugs, gloves and aprons when using materials and equipment that may cause toxic fumes, burns, flying chips or corrosion. 

  5. The following measures are to be taken to prevent tripping:
      • Keep the floor dry and free of clutter at all times;
      • Store tripping hazards such as loose wires, extension cords and strings when not in use;
      • Place electrical equipment close to power outlets;
      • Fasten or tape wires onto surfaces (e.g. table top or floor) with duct tape; and
      • Minimise students’ movement in the art room.

  6. The following measures are to be taken during lessons/activities involving hot wax (e.g. Batik painting/printing, candle-making):
      • Ensure good ventilation during lessons/activities. Windows must be opened; 
      • Ensure students put on protective gear such as respiratory masks, safety glasses and aprons.
      • The use of induction stoves are strongly recommended as they have safety features that reduce the risk of burns.
      • The use of heavy-based stainless steel pots are strongly recommended as they are more stable.  Do not use the following:
          • Saucepans with long single handles; and 
          • Lightweight pots (e.g. aluminum pots).
      • Watch out for signs of overheating, such as fumes and bubbling of hot wax.
      • Ensure that no more than 3 students are sharing an appliance for melting wax at any one time
      • To avoid accidents and burn-related injuries caused by tripping, the following regulations must be adhered to:
          • No walking space between power outlets and appliances;
          • Place appliances on stable worktops which are set against the walls where the appliances are plugged into.  Where possible, induction stoves should be secured onto indented worktops to prevent them from getting dislodged;
          • Do not fill pots to more than half their capacity to prevent spillage; and
          • Use only aluminum foil to protect worktops.  Do not use materials which will burn easily, e.g. newspaper.
